Verdon’s vultures – LPO Paca

About This Project

Reintroduction of cinereous vultures in Verdon (France)

The griffon and cinereous vultures having disappeared from the Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur region, many actors have mobilized to reintroduce these emblematic birds in the Gorges du Verdon.
From 1999 to 2004, 91 griffon vultures (born in zoos or coming from rescue centers) were reintroduced there, with success since today this colony has more than 600 individuals!
Since 2005, the reintroduction of cinereous vultures has been carried out by the LPO PACA. 41 individuals were released, equipped with GPS beacons, in order to follow their movements and their habits! In parallel, the LPO collects the losses of breeders and puts them in feeding plots so that these scavenger birds can feed. We are happy to support these actions since 2019!
