Akatia – Protection of primates in Côte d’Ivoire

Founded in 2017, the Akatia association is a conservation NGO that acts directly on the ground in Côte d’Ivoire to preserve tropical forests but also to protect primates, such as West African chimpanzees, various species of cercopithecus, mangabeys and patas.

Akatia teams work directly in the heart of the forest to monitor the animals and their habitat. The association manages two sanctuaries hosting chimpanzees and several species of small monkeys that are victims of illegal trafficking and poaching. After rescue, the animals are cared for, rehabilitated and, where possible, reintroduced into their natural environment.

Akatia’s main projects are based on:

• the rescue of primates,
• the management of its sanctuaries,
• the protection of forest habitats, in collaboration with the Ministry of Water and Forests
• Combating illegal wildlife trade

These actions are essential in the face of the many threats to Ivorian wildlife:

• deforestation,
• intensive agriculture,
• animal trafficking,
• hunting for bushmeat,
• habitat fragmentation.

Scientific studies highlight the decline of populations of chimpanzees and other primates in Côte d’Ivoire, reinforcing the need for Akatia’s conservation actions.
